1968 was the year of the “Bullitt”, the crime drama that revolutionized the genre, starring Steve McQueen and a Ford Mustang GT390.
McQueen’s Lieutenant Frank Bullitt invented the gritty cop character, unflappable and fearlessly insubordinate. He was a badass cop who inspired many contemporary followers, like Eastwood’s Dirty Harry and Hackman’s “Popeye” Doyle, and several more in generations to follow.
What car was worthy of transporting the progenitor of badass-itude? That’s right, the badgeless dark green Ford Mustang GT390. The 2008 Mustang Bullitt is the legend reincarnate.
“The 2008 Mustang Bullitt, like the movie car, is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Doug Gaffka, chief designer. “Mustang is – and always has been – such an icon that it’s recognizable without the badges. But Bullitt’s clean exterior doesn’t give away the Ford Racing-inspired power and performance lurking under its skin.”
With a limited production of 7,700 units, the 2008 Bullitt is also poised to become a future classic.
